Use this study question to prepare you for the essay section, which draws on material from multiple modules: Wendy Brown identifies democracy’s tremendous challenge today as emanating from two very different forces and bids for the future: Reactionary nationalist populism and Post-national technocracy. Drawing on what you learned throughout the course (especially modules 3 and 6) explain how each of these poses a threat to democracy in different ways. This essay question (yes, I've given it to you ahead of time) will be worth 100 points on the final exam. An A answer will be able to synthesize material from throughout the course in its response. Consider the philosophical dimension of this question as well as how we are seeing this play out today in the context of globalization, technological development, migration, strained relations between state and society (as well as elites/people), and the many other pressures on the system that we studied this semester. You will be graded on how well you demonstrate your understanding of how both of these forces contribute to current problems.
